Ellison: Apple is doomed without Jobs

By Barry Collins

Posted on 13 Aug 2013 at 09:20

Oracle boss Larry Ellison has predicted that Apple will once again face a steep decline without Steve Jobs.

The outspoken Oracle CEO was asked about Apple's prospects without Jobs, who died of cancer in 2011, in an interview with US television channel CBS.

Ellison replied that "we already know" - referring to the years in the mid-eighties and early nineties when Jobs was away from Apple and the company came perilously close to going out of business. "We conducted the experiment. It's been done," Ellison added.

"We saw Apple with Steve Jobs," said Ellison, raising his finger to illustrate a sharp incline. "We saw Apple without Steve Jobs," he said, indicating a sharp decline.

"We saw Apple with Steve Jobs," he repeated, referring to Jobs' return in the company in 1996, and once again sending his finger skyward, "and now, we're going to see Apple without Steve Jobs," he concluded, plunging the finger back towards the ground.

Ellison paid a glowing tribute to Jobs, claiming that the former Apple CEO was "brilliant". "He was our Edison, he was our Picasso, he was an incredible inventor."

Ellison was made a director of Apple shortly after Jobs returned to the company in the mid-1990s, but he resigned in 2002, claiming he didn't have time to attend the board meetings.

U.S. condemns Iraq bombing wave; new violence kills seven more

By Sylvia Westall

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Shootings and a bombing killed at least seven more people in Iraq on Sunday, after a day of carnage as sectarian tensions rise across the country.

The United States condemned a wave of car bombings which killed nearly 80 people across Iraq on Saturday, saying those who had attacked civilians during celebrations marking the end of Ramadan were "enemies of Islam".

Bombs ripped through markets, shopping streets and parks late on Saturday as Iraqis were out celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim fasting month.

Eighteen months since the last U.S. troops withdrew, Sunni Islamist militants have been regaining momentum in their insurgency against Iraq's Shi'ite-led government.

Saturday's attacks targeted mainly Shi'ite districts and the renewed violence has raised fears Iraq could relapse into the sectarian bloodbath of 2006-2007.

The civil war in neighboring Syria has aggravated tensions further and Iraq's Interior Ministry has said it is facing an "open war".

"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the cowardly attacks today in Baghdad," the State Department said.

"The terrorists who committed these acts are enemies of Islam and a shared enemy of the United States, Iraq, and the international community."

It said the United States would work closely with the Iraqi government to confront al Qaeda and discuss this during a visit of Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari next week to Washington.

DEADLY RAMADAN

This has been one of the deadliest Ramadan months in years, with bomb attacks killing hundreds. Bomb attacks in Baghdad on Tuesday killed 50.

On Sunday gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint manned by Sunni militia, killing two and wounding two in the town of Buhriz, about 60 km (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, police said.

Further north, gunmen attacked a busy park in the town of Balad, killing two and wounding three, police said.

To the south of the capital, three anti-terrorism squad officers were killed and nine wounded by a roadside bomb in the town of Mahaweel, 60 km (35 miles) from Baghdad.

More than 1,000 Iraqis were killed in July, the highest monthly death toll since 2008, according to the United Nations.

"These attacks follow a number of shocking incidents that have taken place across Iraq recently and are clearly intended to fuel sectarian strife and destabilize the country," British Foreign Minister Alistair Burt said in a statement.

"This carnage reflects the inhuman character of its perpetrators," United Nations envoy to Iraq Gyorgy Busztin said.

"All honest Iraqis should unite to put an end to this murderous violence that aims to push the country into sectarian strife."

The State Department said Saturday's attacks bore the hallmarks of al Qaeda's Iraqi (AQI) branch. It reiterated that it was offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the killing or capture of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the AQI leader.

Last month al Qaeda claimed responsibility for simultaneous raids on two Iraqi prisons and said more than 500 inmates had escaped in the brazen operation.

The reward for Baghdadi is second only to that offered for information leading to the capture of Ayman al-Zawahri, the overall chief of al Qaeda's network, the State Department said.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Church's Chicken was robbed at gunpoint Saturday, and Huntsville police have a suspect in custody.

An employee of the restaurant in the 1200 block of Memorial Parkway told police the offender entered the business at about 8:17 p.m., showed a gun and demanded money. The store gave him an unknown amount of money from the register, and the offender fled on foot, the employee added in the report.

Officers located the suspect, Johnny Woods, 51, a short time later and booked him in the metro jail. He is charged with first-degree robbery.

Churches feel vulnerable after Mugabe reelected in Zimbabwe

A top Anglican bishop says that church edifices, orphanages, homes of priests, and missions are being eyed by a renegade clergy-friend of Zimbabwe's president.?

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the main challenger, says he will not join in a new governing coalition but is contesting the credibility of the July 31 vote in court.

Fears are on the rise in the capital of Harare, reports say, that under one-party rule, a host of Mr. Mugabe?s old partners, cronies, henchmen, and friends will start to come out of the woodwork to take advantage of the hour.

Foreign-owned banks, mines, and businesses have heard that, to fulfill a campaign promise made by Mugabe, their assets may be seized and restructured into a majority national ownership arrangement.

Now it appears the considerable property of the Anglican church in Zimbabwe, though it is mostly a black membership, may also be under renewed scrutiny by the unscrupulous.

The chief Anglican bishop in Zimbabwe, Chad Gandiya, this week accused a renegade clergyman and friend of Mugabe of restarting a campaign using brutality, the courts, and police to seize churches, orphanages, and missions owned by mainstream Anglicans.

Mr. Gandiya told the Associated Press that Nolbert Kunonga, a defrocked bishop who stumped for Mugabe and last week called him a leader ?sent from God,? is using the emotion around the landslide vote as an opportunity to seize property associated with the Church of England.

Several years ago Mr. Kunonga, who is US educated and has told The New York Times that he is a ?superior person? to the other members of the Anglican clergy, began by legal and extralegal means?to take over church properties, including the cathedral of Harare.

Gandiya told reporters that Kunonga this week sent thugs into his own home in Harare, where they stole cellphones and records of church holdings and personnel.

Gandiya also said that in the area of Murewa, outside Harare, local police are supporting Kunonga?s effort to take over a mission, and to evict 100 children from the Shearly Cripps orphanage, first started by British and American missionaries.

Anglican clergy and assets have been under attack in Zimbabwe for years as part of Mugabe?s long standing tryst with the West and its institutions of influence.

Mugabe is a Roman Catholic but has sought and found alliances with those in other faiths, like Kunonga, who share his anti-Western ideology.?

But now, on the heels of a contested ?landslide? election where Mugabe promised to expand ?reform? policies that earlier led to evictions of white farmers from their land, a variety of Protestant and Catholic churches, despite being largely black, are again worried.?

Officials from Mugabe?s Zanu PF party spoke this Tuesday of instituting new forms of ?wealth transfer.?

Foreign-owned mines and banks are worth an estimated $9 billion in value.

So the limited Zimbabwe religious blogosphere is taking notice of the behavior of Kunonga, who had been excommunicated in 2007. He formed a splinter church and began to appropriate and ?share? ?Anglican property with the apparent blessing of Mugabe.

Kunonga?s splinter church for a time enjoyed standing but is now in legal limbo. But this could change again. Kunonga currently holds, in contravention of a court order, some of the largest Anglican church buildings and edifices in Harare, including the main cathedral, along with bank accounts and vehicles.

He has also developed a reputation for brutality. Two years ago, Kunonga told a New York Times reporter in Harare that he planned to take over some 3,000 Anglican properties in Africa for his own use and profit.

In the interview, he alluded to the use of violence, saying, ?You must have a very good reason to kill people. Being a political scientist, I know who to eliminate if I wanted to physically, and to make it effective. I?m a strategist.?

He added that, ?If I want to pick on people to kill, Gandiya would not survive here.??

The head of the Anglican church, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has said he is seeking a visit to speak with Mugabe about the issue.?

Senior Mafia member arrested in London after 20 years on run

LONDON (Reuters) - A senior member of an Italian mafia clan, wanted by the Italian authorities for almost 20 years, has been arrested in London where he had been running a travel agency, British police said on Thursday.

Domenico Rancadore, 64, who had been sentenced to seven years in jail while on the run, was detained in west London under a European arrest warrant on Wednesday, London's Metropolitan Police said.

The Italian Interior Ministry said he was a leading member of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra group and was accused of mafia association, extortion and other serious crimes.

Rancadore, nicknamed "U profissuri" (the professor), is the son of Giuseppe Rancadore, the former head of the mafia clan in Trabia near Palermo, who is serving a life sentence in jail.

In Britain, Domenico Rancadore ran a travel agency and lived a comfortable life, the Italian Interior Ministry said.

British media reported Roncadore, a qualified physical education teacher, had been living with his British wife and two children at a suburban house in west London using the name "Marc Skinner".

Rancadore appeared on Thursday at London's Westminster Magistrates Court, where his lawyer said he had lived a "blameless life" in Britain, the BBC reported.

The judge overseeing his case said there were concerns over the validity of his arrest warrant and he was remanded in custody to reappear in court again on Friday.

Five Common Social Media Mistakes Your Business Can Avoid ...

Social media has become a necessary part of doing business online, but companies need to plan ahead and properly maintain these accounts to ensure that they are taking steps forward rather than backward. Certain errors have become increasingly frequent, but many of these can fortunately be avoided with simple maintenance, basic planning and a little bit of creativity. Here are five common social media mistakes that can negatively affect businesses of all sizes:

  1. Lack of personality ? The consumers you are trying to reach often use platforms like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram as an entertaining diversion. Thus, it is important for companies to make sure that posts have an element of fun that compels people to share. Your business is not likely to become too popular if you use social media accounts simply as another avenue for hard sells.
  2. Failing to post ? If a consumer wants to know more about your company, one of the first places they may visit after your official website will be your Facebook or Twitter page. If your last post on these accounts was months, or even years ago, they not only question your commitment to social media, they might also conclude that you?re probably not in business anymore.
  3. Careless automation ? Some automated tools have become antiquated SEO techniques that consumers can instantly identify as insincere interactions. Worse yet, a series of blog posts that suddenly appear in a span of minutes can cause many people to hide, unfollow or unlike your page. There are certain web tools out there that can help you manage automated posts more effectively, but mindlessly posting excess material feels like spam and ultimately loses more customers than it gains.
  4. Signing up for too many platforms ? Just because there are accounts available for Google+, Instagram and Pinterest does not mean your company needs to sign up for every one. Again, creating an account that goes unused or underused can be even worse than not having the account at all. Identify the social media platform that best fits your brand and master that before creating more than you can handle. If you need help, do not be afraid to consider hiring a social media management service.
  5. Mishandling comments or questions ? Mismanagement of interactions with users causes all sorts of problems for businesses. There are issues with questions going unanswered, complaints not being responded to and or appearance of a company being selective with which posts it chooses to address. It is important to be consistent in all of these respects, and businesses also need to understand that there are negative consequences to removing or ignoring public complaints. When a consumer takes the time to articulate a concern or negative experience on your company?s page, you want to avoid the standard coupons or discounts with an apology that looks like a bribe.

While there have been many businesses immortalized for social media disasters, there have also been just as many social media accounts that have created thousands of new and loyal fans who regularly interact with the companies. Finding the right combination of planning and pleasure can go a long way in helping make your social media accounts succeed.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says he's had mixed success in persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin to think "forward as opposed to backward" on a variety of issues and is reassessing the U.S.-Russia relationship.

Obama told reporters at a news conference Friday that Putin's return to the Kremlin last year has brought about more rhetoric on the Russian side that is anti-American and plays into old stereotypes about the Cold War contest between the nations.

Obama told reporters that he decided not to attend a summit with Putin planned next month for Moscow because "Russia has not moved" on a range of issues where the U.S. would like to see progress.

He says his unhappiness with Russia granting temporary asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden wasn't the only reason for his decision.

Florida exports down slightly in June

The latest international trade numbers show that $5.03 billion worth of goods left Florida for international markets in June.

The latest international trade numbers show that $5.03 billion worth of goods left Florida for international markets in June, down 0.8 percent from May, according to Durham, N.H.-based e-forecasting.com.

The June data is the most recent available.

Exports of manufactured goods contributed significantly to the state?s international trade, accounting for 75 percent of all state exports in June. However, exports from state manufacturers decreased in June by 1.7 percent from the previous month to $3.75 billion.

Meanwhile, exports of non-manufactured goods went up 2 percent in June to $1.27 billion. This group of shipments abroad consists of agricultural goods, mining products and re-exports ? foreign goods that entered the state as imports and are exported in substantially the same condition as when imported.

How does Florida compare to other states in export growth in 2013 through the first half of the year? In the first six months, foreign sales from Florida?s companies decreased by an annual rate of 5.8 percent compared with the first six months in 2012. As a result, Florida ranked 39th among the 50 states in export growth so far this year.

As for the prospects over the next few months for exports of manufactured goods, that will depend on the pace of incoming orders from abroad. According to the July business survey conducted by the Institute of Supply Management, the nation?s purchasing executives are optimistic about the outlook of growing export markets.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based research institute reported that its export indicator showed an expansion in incoming export orders for the eighth month in a row, following six consecutive months of contraction dating back to June 2012.

As for the outlook for the remainder of 2013, the International Monetary Fund forecasts the volume of global trade to grow just 3.1 percent for the year. The IMF?s forecast shows that emerging and developing countries will drive foreign demand for Florida?s exporters, contributing to local production and jobs substantially more than the high-income industrial countries.

Stocks snap 3-day losing streak

stocks

Stocks snapped a three-day losing streak Thursday, with the S&P 500 finishing just below the 1,700 mark, buoyed by stronger-than-expected Chinese trade data and following a favorable jobless claims report.

The?Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 27.65 points to finish at 15,498.32, lifted by?Microsoft and?Caterpillar.

The?S&P 500 gained 6.57 points to end at 1,697.48. And the?Nasdaq rose 15.12 points to close at 3,669.12.

The?CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, finished below 13.

(Read more:?S&P 1,900possible in 12 months: JPMorgan's Lee)

Most key S&P sectors ended higher, led by?materials and?consumer discretionary, while?telecoms finished in the red.

Major averages have been dented this week amid uncertainty about when the Fed may start winding down its stimulus program. The Dow and S&P 500 have declined more than 1 percent each for the week. The Dow is poised to log its first weekly drop in seven weeks.?

"For a significant move, we need to have some clarity on what the Fed is going to be doing?we need to get to the point where we know when the Fed will be tapering and see that things will be fine economically," said Paul Hogan, managing of the FAM Equity-Income Fund. "This becomes a little bit of a stock picker's market."?

Most recently, Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher told German business newspaper Handelsblatt that the central bank should begin to taper its bond purchases in September, unless the economy worsens significantly, reiterating his comments from earlier this week.?

Fisher's comments echo similar sentiments from other Fed officials. On Tuesday, Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans and Atlanta Fed president Dennis Lockhart both said the initial taper in the central bank's asset purchase program could start as early as September.

"The drumbeat of Fed officials point to a possible tapering later this year and these comments likely had an impact on capping the market upside and leading to a bit of profit taking," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial Group. "September and October have been more difficult months for the markets, so it would be reasonable for investors to be cautious ? monetary policy and the Fed will move to the front burner and will be the market mover in the next couple of weeks."

Still, Sheldon noted that market internals have been "extremely positive" over the last several months.

"So unless we see the transports, small caps, and leadership groups like the financials and consumer discretionary falter, the benefit of the doubt is still with the bulls at this point," he said.

Auburn University's Chaplain Chette Williams aims for a goal more important than football victories

AUBURN, Alabama ? There?s nothing that Chette Williams, who played football at Auburn University, wants to do more than win.

But Williams ? chaplain to the Auburn football team and coaches for 15 years -- defines ?winning? a little different from most football fans.

Take Williams' prediction, given last week as fall practiced kicked off for the Tigers, regarding the 2013 football season, for example.

?My prediction for this season?? Williams said, repeating the question during a telephone interview with The Huntsville Times on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

?This year, we?re going to see a lot of guys cross the finish line for Jesus.?

The most important victories in life, Williams explains in his new book, ?The Broken Road: Finding God?s Strength and Grace on a Journey of Faith,? just out from Looking Glass Books, don?t happen on the 100-yard green carpet in a football stadium full of cheering fans.

  • Williams will be signing copies of his book in Huntsville on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Jones Valley Barnes & Noble, 2750 Carl T Jones Drive SE.

In ?Broken Road? Williams details how God walked alongside the team in the years that led up to the 2010 championship season and especially during that amazing 2010 season.

The most important victories Williams witnessed happen in hospital rooms and rehab centers when players worked through their pain to regain their strength. The most heroic demonstration of winning happened in the locker room when a guy who had just been replaced in a starting position gave a pep talk to the rest of the team about truly supporting each other, no matter what.

?This book is about how the Lord joined alongside these players on their broken roads,? Williams said.

Those are the kind of victories that advance a young man?s life toward a much more enduring goal than out-scoring another team, he said.

When a football player takes some of his few hours of free time and volunteers to tutor some kids at a local elementary school, when other players participate in a service trip to help Haitian refugees in desperate conditions in a camp in the Dominican Republic ? that?s when they do what Williams hopes they will do: Use the platform of the football field onto which they?ve been elevated to the eyes of every fan of the SEC as a place from which to proclaim God?s love and to make the world a little better.

?God allows us to bear pain and heartache almost to the breaking point because those experiences strengthen us,? Williams writes in ?Broken Road.? ?They open our eyes to the hardships of people around us so we can be a comfort to them ? and they remind us that true strength comes from God.?

Story updated 8/7/13, 9:26 a.m. to correct bit in Williams' bio.
