Dog beats out Kardashian for Skechers Super Bowl ad

By Marisa Taylor

Reality television star Kim Kardashian has taken a lot of flak for her 72-day marriage to New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries.

But she probably never dreamed that she?d be bested by a dog.

In what is perhaps the ultimate humiliation, Kardashian has been swapped out for a French bulldog in a commercial for Skechers GORun shoes that will air during this year?s Super Bowl, USA Today reports.

The reality star appeared in a steamy commercial for Skechers Shape-Up shoes during last year?s Super Bowl, but the Skechers commercial airing during this year?s game will instead feature a dog. In the spot, the dog will wear Sketchers GORun shoes and will race against a pack of greyhounds at Tucson Greyhound Park, according to the newspaper.

(Said steamy ad is below. Post continues below steamy ad.)

But Skechers insists that the absence of Kardashian in the company?s new Super Bowl commercial is not due to backlash against the reality star over her hugely hyped wedding and quickie divorce. Leonard Armato, president of Skechers Fitness, told USA Today that "Kim got us more attention than we ever dreamed. We have to establish Skechers as more than a lifestyle company."

Armato told USA Today that while Kardashian?s contract with Sketchers expired at the end of 2011, she had a big influence on the brand?s popularity, and attributes much of the 400 percent increase in fans on the Skechers Facebook page after the Super Bowl to her star power.

Sketchers on Tuesday also announced that Mark Cuban, owner of both Landmark Theaters and the Dallas Mavericks, would make a cameo in the Skechers Super Bowl spot as GORun?s new spokesman.

Cuban told USA Today that while he?s no Kim Kardashian, ?one of the things I do know is high technology and how to use it.?

A look at Republican ballot blunders (AP)

Several of the Republican candidates for president have failed to get on the ballot in some primaries or failed to file full slates of delegates in others, limiting their ability to win delegates in those slates. The exceptions: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

The others:

_Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum failed to get on the ballot in Virginia and the District of Columbia and didn't file full slates of delegates in Ohio and Illinois.

_Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman failed to get on the ballot in Arizona, Illinois and Virginia.

_Texas Gov. Rick Perry failed to get on the ballot in Virginia and had only one delegate file signatures to get on the ballot in Illinois, a contest that will award 54 delegates.

_Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich failed to get on the ballot for the Virginia and Missouri primaries, though the Missouri primary will not award any delegates.

(AP) ? Activists say Syrian security forces have shot dead at least 10 people in an eastern city despite the presence of an Arab observer mission in the area.

Tuesday's violence in Deir el-Zour comes as Syrian President Bashar Assad vowed in his first speech since June to respond to threats with an "iron hand" and refused to step down, insisting he still has his people's support despite a 10-month-old revolt.

Kuwait's official news agency also reported that a group of Arab League observers were attacked in the northern city of Latakia on Monday and two Kuwaiti army officers were lightly injured.

The observers' mission is to monitor compliance with an Arab League plan to stop violence after a 10-month uprising and a bloody crackdown on protesters.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Arab League is blaming both the Syrian government and opposition for attacks on its observers in Syria.

Arab League head Nabil Elaraby indicated such attacks could bring about the end of the observer mission.

He spoke after protesters mobbed a Kuwaiti observers' vehicle, slightly injuring two officers. Protesters posted video showing that the attackers were backers of the Bashar Assad regime.

Elaraby said Tuesday that the Syrian government is responsible for ensuring the safety of the observers. Their mission is to monitor compliance with an Arab League plan to stop violence after a 10-month uprising and a bloody crackdown on protesters.

He called on both the government and opposition to stop "instigation," so that the Arab League would not be forced to "freeze its mission."

Plextor announces M3 Pro SSD with 24nm flash and 7mm form factor

Bored by Plextor's safe and steady M3S? Then ponder on its new performance model, the 2.5-inch, SATAIII-sporting M3 Pro. It notches up random read/write speeds by around seven percent to 75,000/69,000 IOPs, while sequential read/writes have also had a marginal bump to 540MB/s and 450MB/s. It's not yet clear how much the new drives will cost when they reach stores in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB varieties next month, but the use of 24nm toggle flash -- which squeezes more storage onto less silicon -- should help to keep pricing relatively sane. Oh, and the 7mm height also means that the M3 Pro will slide happily into the compressed bowels of your Ultrabook -- unless that slot has already been reserved for a Crucial. Read on for the press release.

Lenovo IdeaPad U400

Lenovo is known for its high-quality business laptops, the plain black looks of which users have been able to recognize for years. The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 ($899.99 direct), on the other hand, looks and feels like it was designed to attract mainstream users. In addition to being well equipped, with an Intel Core i5 processor, discrete AMD graphics, a spacious hard drive, and forward-thinking features like USB 3.0 and WiDi 2.0, its sandblasted aluminum chassis and glass touchpad make it a system you'll literally want to get your hands on.

Design
It's hard to do justice to the design of the U400 using words alone, because this laptop is one you have to touch and feel to fully appreciate. The chassis is made from a single sheet of gray aluminum, molded seamlessly like the unibody design of the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Late 2011) ($1,799 direct, 4 stars). It's been sandblasted to create a "warm" finish that isn't just smooth but is a pleasure to touch.

This aspect has been extended to every element of the laptop. The touchpad's glass surface feels silky smooth and almost soft; this is the first time I've been loath to pull my fingers away from a touchpad. The keyboard is just as nice: Unlike the square tile keys popularized by Apple, Lenovo uses a scalloped variation of the chiclet keys; they travel smoothly, with just the right combination of firmness and give, and feel almost as luxurious as the touchpad.

The underside of the chassis is as smooth and clean as the lid, without even a vent to disrupt the surface. That's because Lenovo has used a new cooling system that utilizes a breathable keyboard as the primary air intake. A small vent on the left side of the chassis is the only one you'll see, but there are others concealed in the hinge. The result is what Lenovo calls a "pillow-proof" ventilation system?with no bottom vents to obstruct, you can set the laptop on a pillow without having to worry about it overheating.

The U400 utilizes the same book-cover design seen on its ultrabook sibling, the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s ($1,495 list, 4 stars). Instead of the wedge or clamshell shape seen on so many laptops, the IdeaPad U400 has a flat profile, with the edges of the top and bottom lids protruding slightly, like the covers of a book. Measuring 0.89 by 13.38 by 9.05 inches (HWD) and weighing 4.25 pounds, the U400 has roughly the same dimensions as the Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars) and weighs a bit less.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 has a 14-inch screen, with 1,366-by-768 resolution. That doesn't top the 1,440-by-900 screen of the recent 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro, it's more than sufficient for browsing the Web, streaming 720p video, or multitasking with side by side windows.

Features
The features found on the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 are on par with the best mainstream laptops we've seen recently, like the Apple MacBook Air or Dell XPS 14z. Like these other thin laptops, the IdeaPad omits a few ports to maintain its thin profile, but most people won't miss the VGA or eSATA ports. What you will find are three USB ports, two USB 2.0 and one faster USB 3.0, along with a headset jack and Gigabit Ethernet port. A slot-loading DVD?RW burner maintains the chassis' clean lines, and an HDMI port lets you connect the laptop to a monitor or HDTV. If you want to ditch the cable entirely, the IdeaPad U400 also has WiDi 2.0, a wireless streaming technology that uses the Netgear Push2TV adapter (a $99 extra). Other wireless technologies include 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0.

Our review unit came equipped with a 750GB 7,200rpm hard drive, which is similar to the 750GB drives found in the recent Dell XPS 14z and the HP Envy 14 (Sandy Bridge) ($1,079.99 direct, 4 stars), and larger than the 500GB drive provided in the Apple MacBook Pro. There is software preinstalled on the drive, but it can hardly be called bloatware. Aside from Microsoft Office Starter 2010, you get full versions of everything, like Microsoft Security Essentials, Absolute Data Protect, and Google's Chrome browser, plus utilities like Lenovo Enhanced Experience Boot Optimizer and Lenovo OneKey Recover. Lenovo covers the IdeaPad U400 with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.

Performance
Lenovo IdeaPad U400 Lenovo has outfitted the IdeaPad U400 with 6GB of RAM and a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-2430M, a dual-core, four-thread processor similar to those found in the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars) and HP Envy 14, with a slight bump up in speed. In CineBench R11.5, the IdeaPad U400 scored 2.65, edging ahead of both the Inspiron 14z (2.58) and Envy 14 (2.24). Even when stacked against Core i7?equipped systems like the MacBook Pro 15-inch (Late 2011) and Dell XPS 14z, the Lenovo produces strong overall performance. In PCMark 7, the IdeaPad U400 scored 2,309, compared with the MacBook (2,235) and XPS 14z (2,261).

Lenovo IdeaPad U400

The IdeaPad U400 will also make a good addition to the arsenal of anyone who works with photos, video, or graphic design. It made short work of our Handbrake (1 minute 59 seconds) and Photoshop (4:08) tests. These aren't the fastest results of the bunch?those belong to the MacBook Pro (Handbrake 1:30) and XPS 14z (Photoshop 3:27)?but they're within spitting distance.

One of the few areas where the IdeaPad U400 fell behind was 3D graphics. Equipped with switchable AMD Radeon HD 6470M graphics processing, the Lenovo produced 3DMark 06 scores of 4,835 at 1,024-by-768 resolution and default detail settings, and 3,478 when turned up to 1,366-by-768 resolution and enhanced details. Even with discrete graphics, the IdeaPad couldn't match the high-octane results seen in the Samsung Series 7 (10,807 points at 1,024 by 768) and MacBook Pro 15-inch (11,180 at 1,024 by 768). The IdeaPad U400 also fell behind in gaming, turning out barely playable frame rates in Crysis (31.5 frames per second, or fps) and unplayable frame rates in Lost Planet 2 (15.6fps). There's a lot you can do with the Lenovo IdeaPad U400, but high-performance gaming isn't on the list.

One method used to keep the chassis slim is to seal the battery within, with none of the bulk added by a release mechanism. It's a design decision we've also seen on the Apple MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS 14z, and just as with those laptops, you won't be able to access the IdeaPad's battery to swap it out. Thankfully, the U400's 54Wh battery lasted a full 6 hours in our MobileMark 2007 battery test. This time is comparable to both the Dell XPS 14z (6:03, 58Wh) and HP Envy 14 (5:15, 56Wh), but it's easily beaten by the larger, longer-lasting Dell Inspiron 14z (8:38, 65Wh).

The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 brings luxury to the mainstream laptop, combining a design that looks good and feels even better with solid performance and features like USB 3.0 and WiDi 2.0. In terms of performance, it's an excellent alternative to our Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5), but it can't compete on price. You'll be hard pressed, however, to find a more touchable competitor.

NFL Notebook: Chiefs hire Crennel

By

January 10, 2012 12:00 AM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Going 2-1 and stunning then-undefeated Green Bay as Kansas City's interim head coach meant a lot more than gratification for Romeo Crennel.

It also persuaded the Kansas City Chiefs to give the affable defensive specialist a second chance to be an NFL head coach.

The Chiefs announced Monday that Crennel was the official replacement for the fired Todd Haley, removing the interim tag he bore for the last three weeks of the season.

"The three games had a lot to do with where we arrived at this decision," general manager Scott Pioli said. "Some of the things we saw was a great deal of accountability and consistency. There was also a different energy to the football team. A lot of it had to do with those last three games."

Warm and personable, the 64-year-old Crennel is a sharp departure from Haley. Often called a "players' coach" he's been known to write off mistakes as youthful indiscretions. Ironically, being soft with players was a criticism when he was fired after four years as head coach in Cleveland with a 24-40 record.

He was an instant hit with Chiefs players while serving as Haley's defensive coordinator the past two years. After the Chiefs beat the Packers 19-14 on Dec. 18 in their first game with Crennel in charge, the Chiefs chanted his nickname, "RAC! RAC!" as they ran up the tunnel.

He was always considered the front-runner to replace Haley, even though Pioli said he interviewed "more than half a dozen" candidates.

"I'm not exactly sure what a player's coach is," Crennel said. "Sometimes I think players think that a coach who is on their side is a player's coach, who always rules in favor of them may be a players' coach. I know that's not always the case with me. I think that basically, I'm a good guy. And I think this is what players appreciate ? players appreciate honesty. Players appreciate you telling them like it is. They don't always want to hear it. But that's what they appreciate. I try to tell them what I believe, what I feel and how I think it should be done."

Packers fear worst with coordinator's son missing

The Green Bay Packers canceled player availability on Monday, bracing for bad news as authorities searched for the missing 21-year-old son of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin amid fears that he had drowned in an icy Wisconsin river.

Police in Oshkosh, Wis. have been searching for 21-year-old Michael T. Philbin since Sunday evening. He disappeared at about 2 a.m. Sunday after an outing with friends in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus area, about 50 miles from Green Bay.

Joe Philbin spent Monday in Oshkosh, where divers recovered the body of a man between the ages of 20 and 25 from the Fox River in late afternoon after a security guard reported hearing cries for help from someone on the ice. Oshkosh Police said no foul play was suspected, but the man's name was being withheld until his family is notified.

Chargers to stay in San Diego in 2012

The San Diego Chargers are staying put next season.

Owner Dean Spanos said Monday that the team will not exercise its right to move the NFL franchise for at least another year.

The Chargers want to allow more time for efforts to build a new downtown stadium. Spanos and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders say in a joint statement that they will work closely together to make that happen.

Sanders leaves office at the end of this year due to term limits.

Each year through 2020, the Chargers can announce intentions to leave San Diego on condition they pay off bonds that were sold to expand Qualcomm Stadium in 1997.

New Jaguars owner Khan shakes up front office

New Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has dismissed Paul Vance as the team's senior vice president of football operations and general counsel. Vance had been with the organization since its inception.

Khan promoted Sashi Brown to senior vice president and general counsel. Brown had served as assistant general counsel since 2005. In an email to team employees, Khan says Vance will be available as a consultant.

It's unclear whether Khan will make more changes. Vance had been the franchise's general counsel since 1994. He was promoted to senior VP of football operations in 2001 and credited with helping the team solve salary-cap problems that plagued former coach Tom Coughlin's final few years.

Falcons' VanGorder to take over Auburn's defense

AUBURN, Ala. ? Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has returned to the college ranks to take the same job at Auburn.

Auburn announced the hiring Monday of VanGorder, who has run Atlanta's defense for four years.

VanGorder's move continues his pattern of moving back and forth between college and NFL positions. He is the former coach at Georgia Southern and former defensive coordinator at Georgia, where he won the 2003 Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach.

VanGorder left Georgia to become an assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 before coaching at Georgia Southern and moving back to the NFL with the Falcons.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family at this point in my career, both professionally and personally, to become the defensive coordinator at Auburn," he said. "I'm looking forward to working at a school with the success and tradition of Auburn, and for a coach like Gene Chizik, who has led the program to a national championship. I'm very appreciative to the Atlanta Falcons and Coach Mike Smith for the experience of the last four years. It's a great organization and will have continued success in the future."

The Falcons finished the regular season ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing defense and 12th in total defense. Their season ended with Sunday's 24-2 loss to the Giants in an NFC wild-card game.

(AP) ? President Hugo Chavez defended his close ally Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday as tensions rose with the U.S. over Tehran's nuclear program and a death sentence against an American man convicted of working for the CIA.

The two leaders met in Caracas on the first leg of a four-nation tour that will also take Ahmadinejad to Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador.

"They present us as aggressors," Chavez said of U.S. officials as he received the Iranian leader at the presidential palace.

"Iran hasn't invaded anyone," Chavez said. "Who has dropped thousands and thousands of bombs ... including atomic bombs?"

The visit comes after the U.S. imposed tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, which Washington believes Tehran is using to develop atomic weapons. Chavez and his allies back Iran in arguing the nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes.

Adding to the tensions, Iranian state radio reported on Monday that a court in Iran has convicted dual U.S.-Iranian citizen Amir Mirzaei Hekmati of working for the CIA and sentenced him to death.

Both leaders joked that their relationship shouldn't cause any concern.

Ahmadinejad said if they were together building anything like a bomb, "the fuel of that bomb is love."

Chavez played on the same theme in his remarks: "We's going to work a lot for some bombs, for some missiles, to keep the war going. Our war is against poverty, hunger and underdevelopment."

The Venezuelan leader said in his nationally broadcast speech that Iranians assistance has helped the South American country build 14,000 homes as well as factories that produce food, tractors and vehicles.

"We will always be together," Ahmadinejad said through an interpreter. Smiling as he put his hand on Chavez's arm, the Iranian leader called the Venezuelan president "the champion of fighting against imperialism."

Iran finds itself under increasing pressure in the standoff over its nuclear program, and in response to the latest U.S. sanctions has threatened to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, an important transit route for oil tanker shipments.

Diplomats on Monday confirmed a report that Iran has begun uranium enrichment at an underground bunker, a development that increases fears among U.S. and European officials about Iran's nuclear ambitions. Two diplomats spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because their information was confidential and based on an inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Chavez's long-running confrontation with Washington also looks set to grow more antagonistic after the U.S. State Department announced, just hours before Ahmadinejad's arrival, that it was expelling Venezuela's consul general in Miami, Livia Acosta Noguera, due to allegations that she discussed a possible cyber-attack against the U.S. government.

The expulsion followed an FBI investigation into accusations contained in a documentary aired by the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision last month. According to the documentary, Acosta discussed the possible cyber-attack while she was previously assigned as a diplomat in Mexico. The documentary was based on recordings of conversations with her and other officials, and also alleged that Cuban and Iranian diplomatic missions were involved.

Venezuela's government had not responded Monday.

Beyond voicing strong criticism of the U.S., Ahmadinejad is also likely to look for ways to use his Latin American alliances to diminish the impact of sanctions on Iran's oil industry, said Diego Moya-Ocampos, an analyst with consulting firm IHS Global Insight in London.

However, Moya-Ocampos predicted that "Venezuela is going to be very careful not to push its relationship with Iran beyond the U.S. tolerance limits," so as not to risk being hit with more U.S. sanctions. Last year, the U.S. imposed sanctions on state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA for delivering at least two cargoes of oil products to Iran.

The U.S. government has also repeatedly accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism, and growing Iranian diplomatic ties with some Latin American countries have generated worries in Washington.

In Quito, Ecuador, Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino told reporters that Ecuador's government "has no reason to stop having relations with Iran" and said his country recognizes Iran's "right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy."

Argentina, which has good relations with Venezuela, also has warrants out for the arrests of Iran's defense minister and other officials suspected of involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization based in Los Angeles, urged Ahmadinejad's hosts to tell Iran that they support Argentina's demands for the extradition of those implicated in the attack. The organization also condemned Ahmadinejad for threatening Israel, saying in a statement on Monday that "honoring that trafficker of hatred with impunity involves his hosts as accomplices."

Chavez accuses the U.S. and its allies of wrongly demonizing Iran. On Sunday, he rebuffed calls by U.S. officials for countries to insist that Iran stop defying international efforts to assess its nuclear program.

"What the empire does is make you laugh, in its desperation to do something they won't be able to do: dominate this world," Chavez said on television before Ahmadinejad arrived.
